Use this list as a practical starting point for a conversation with your family or care team.
Entryways
- Clear bags, shoes, and packages from the walking path.
- Remove loose rugs or secure every mat with a non-slip backing.
- Add a bright light and an easy-to-reach switch by the door.
- Keep keys, a phone, and frequently used items within easy reach.
Kitchen
- Wipe spills right away and keep the main floor clear.
- Move often-used dishes and food to waist-height shelves.
- Use back burners when possible and turn pot handles inward.
- Store knives and sharp tools securely, away from the counter edge.
- Check that appliance cords are tucked away from walkways and heat.
Bathroom
- Install secure grab bars near the toilet and in the tub or shower.
- Place a non-slip mat inside the tub or shower and outside it.
- Consider a raised toilet seat if sitting down or standing up is difficult.
- Add a night-light from the bedroom to the bathroom.
- Keep soap, towels, and daily toiletries within easy reach.
Bedroom
- Clear a wide path between the bed, door, and bathroom.
- Put a lamp or touch light within reach from the bed.
- Keep supportive, non-slip footwear beside the bed.
- Keep a phone, call device, or emergency contact list nearby.
Hallways
- Remove baskets, furniture, and other obstacles from the hallway.
- Use even lighting, especially at corners and near doorways.
- Secure cords along the wall and away from the walking path.
Stairs
- Check that the handrail is secure and easy to grip.
- Add bright lighting at the top and bottom of the stairs.
- Keep every step clear of shoes, toys, and other items.
- Mark hard-to-see step edges and repair loose or uneven surfaces.
